Oaths and Omissions by Sav R. Miller6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() The Guardian’s editorial cartoonist Martin Rowson employs his trademark draughtsmanship and wit in this lively graphic novel adaptation. It is no surprise, perhaps, that The Communist Manifesto (as it was later renamed) is the second bestselling book of all time, surpassed only by The Bible. ![]() Much of what Marx and Engels proposed continues to be at the heart of political debate in the 21st century. It remains the most incisive introduction to the ideas of Communism and the most lucid explanation of its aims. Published in 1848, at a time of political upheaval in Europe, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’ Manifesto for the Communist Party was at once a powerful critique of capitalism and a radical call to arms. ![]()

After all, the Lord answers this prayer. ![]() How many of us would be likely to pray a prayer like that, “O, Lord I've loved the truth, I've served you wholeheartedly and I've done what is good so you should be to me.” How are we to understand this prayer? What does this prayer really mean? One commentator at least suggests that it is not really a godly prayer at all. “Remember now O Lord, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in thy sight.” II Kings 20:3 records that brief second prayer of Hezekiah: But the second prayer, when Hezekiah falls sick, is not so easy to understand. Such is rather easy to understand and seems to fit in well with our general understanding of prayer and our relationship to God in prayer. The first prayer is that God might be glorified in the defeat of Sennacherib's army. Hezekiah is presented to us in our text through two prayers that he offers to the Lord. But Hezekiah was also a great man of prayer and in the prayer of Hezekiah we can see something of a model for us as to what prayer to the true and living God should be. He did remarkable acts of service to the Lord, particularly protecting the Lord's worship and purifying it. After David he was perhaps the most righteous and faith king that reigned in Judah. ![]() Sweet evil series in order6/7/2023 ![]() The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. Cocky quips (the Green Lantern to Batman: “You’re not just some guy in a bat costume, are you?”) abound, but do little to change or develop readers’ decades-old familiarity with these characters. The plotting and character dynamics are mechanical and cautious: our heroes haven’t really changed, but their costumes have. Beset by infighting, these three are joined by Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg to battle ever-multiplying emissaries sent by Darkseid to collect and recycle human beings. Writer Johns resets the time line to “five years ago,” when the world at large fears and mistrusts Batman, the Green Lantern, and Superman. As a part of DC’s global reboot program, the New 52, these first six issues of Justice League serve as a fast-paced if dramatically inert origin story. ![]() Bride quartet series6/6/2023 ![]() After years of study she has escaped her family’s expectations for a life on the open seas – as a blackjack dealer on a cruise ship. Written in a wild free-association style that disregarded rules of punctuation, it was filled with sentence fragments and used words like “skakkkkkkkkkkkkkk” and “wowwwwwww.” That led to a compilation of Wolfe’s magazine pieces, followed by “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,” which captured the spirit of the psychedelic era during his time with Kesey, author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and his band of pranksters who helped spread the popularity of LSD in California. The magazine ran it verbatim as “There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby.” In frustration, he sent his editor a letter with his thoughts and reportage. One of the genre’s defining moments came when Wolfe was having trouble meeting a deadline for a 1964 magazine story on the hot-rod car culture. He was present at the birth of what was known as “new journalism,” a loose style that featured lots of dialogue and detail and allowed reporters to narrate and develop characters in a way more often associated with fiction. ![]() Bush while receiving the National Humanities Medal in Washington, U.S., April 22, 2002. ![]() FILE PHOTO: Author Tom Wolfe stands with U.S. ![]() |
